Problem Summary: random trojan .exe runs in processes and installed in msconfig startup after opening IE

The summary says it all... When surfing the web with firefox, IE opened and I instantly was alerted to a virus infection by both windows firewall, and AVG free. New processes that appeared in Task manager were a.exe, b.exe, c.exe, and some others that I forgot (I manually killed the processes, and deleted the exe files and all the temp files from the \"user name\"\\local_settings\\Temp folder that were generating the problem). AVG healed the trojans, but when I tried to manually update windows XP, IE opened and it started again, although less maliciously. A new process 7E.exe appeared in task manager, and was added to the msconfig startup list. Also, new suspect files like 7E.tmp.exe were added to the above mentioned temp folder. I manually deleted the suspect files, and ran AVG again, but AVG did not detect a problem. I think the trojan is renamed every time it is installed after opening IE, so AVG doesn\'t pick it up till the virus database is updated. AVG link scanner also stopped working since the infection. I have hi-jack this, but don\'t know what to check to fix the problem. Please help.
