Problem Summary: Cant read from disc when updating os

Im currently trying to update my windows me to windows xp using a offical windows xp update disc. during the instillation i get an error saying the files cannot not be accessed from the located drive which is the disk. the same thing happened when i tried linux software and the same problem kept me from updating. during the copying of the files during the update the files cannot be read from the disc.. the disk works fine with no scatches.

Hi, I have 500GB External SATA HDD, it was working fine in XP, but as i move to Vista, its Drive were not showing. I checked all the power cables. All are fine. Even HDD has some boot up noise (like spinning within it). I un-plucked it and tried again in XP but same problem. In vista, in "Disk Management" it is showing a section as "Unknown Hard Disk", I tried to perform 'format' and other thing but nothing happening. Whats the problem, does my HDD got crashed???
