trying to remove the last bits of trojan(s?)
Problem Summary: trying to remove the last bits of trojan(s?)
hey, I got a trojan a few weeks ago and Iīve really been trying to take it out as best as i can. Normally I would just reformat and start clean, but Iīve got way too much invested in this setup to make doing that worth the effort.
Anyway, the trojan would make duplicates of all my folders as .exe files. And opening one those executables (54K in size, if that matters) would just run the already-running trojan. Long story short, I downloaded a program to supposedly take care of this, which is called \"Smart Virus Remover\", which did a pretty good job--running it let me use the task manager once again, using which allowed me to shut down all the cmd.exe instances, and after closing the last one of those, my cpu could finally rest and my cpu usage went back down to 1 or 0%, as per normal.
The virus did other things, like changed ip mapping for google and a couple of other sites, which I fixed in the hosts file;
I managed to remove all the extra .exe files it created using the search function to find them, including the hidden ones, so thatīs been done.
Something else: Iīm not sure if this is the same trojan or a different one, but I noticed the name lucifer in some of the files I found around my system while cleaning it up (like lucifer.exe). In any case, I removed those as best as I could.
Also, I canīt use notepad; trying to open that, OR trying to use the basic \"run\" program, OR pushing F1 (to load the help feature...) just fucks the system up again, seemingly bringing the whole trojan back in full force, and then I have to go back and do most of everything again to remove it. Really annoying, especailly when youīre reaching for F2 and you accidentally graze the button to the left... Iīm trying to remap the keyboard buttons right now so F1 does something else right now!
Needless to say, something is still on my system and I need help getting rid of it. I know thereīs shit in my registry thatīs playing around with my system in a maliscious way that I need to address (just havenīt taken the time yet), but I thought Iīd ask: what am I dealing with here? Can I beat this thing fairly easily and restore full functionality back to my system? Is it worth the time, in YOUR opinion, or would you just backup your shit (carefully, I know) and reformat?
One more thing: I also noticed this morning a few instances of something called \"opgde.exe\" lying around in the root folders of my different drive partitions. Is that part of the same trojan or something else?
Ok, thatīs it. I know thatīs a ton of questions and a huge can of worms I opened up, but I really, really appreciate any help you can give me here. Iīm open to removing this thing manually if I have to, or if thereīs a tool you recommend, Iīll definitely consider that.
Thanks in advance!

smss.exe file
Problem Summary: smss.exe file
I have been having problems with my computer and notice my anti-virus (zonealarm & Windows defender) cant access the internet to gather updates and my internet firefox browser keeps bringing me to different websites. Zonealarm noticfied me the smss.exe was trying to start so I searched my computer and there is 2 of the same file. One is located at C:\\WINDOWS\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download\\cf8ec753e88561d2ddb53e183dc05c3e while the other is in C:\\WINDOWS\\system32. I know the second one is the right one. Can I just delete the first one mentioned or is there a process to go through?
